The Riverbank Love Knot

The Riverbank Love Knot is formed from two intertwined overhand knots—a symbol of binding love. Mulloway designed the artwork providing a new place for Adelaide’s love locks. The artwork acknowledges the traditional lovers knots used across many cultures, with the two stainless ‘ropes’ intertwining and the spaces between providing space for love locks. The shaping and size of the new Riverbank Love Knot elegantly meets the much loved heritage footbridge along its northern embankment.
Officially opened for Valentines’ Day 2018, the Riverbank Love Knot resulted from the Adelaide City Council’s decision to remove the love locks from the Adelaide University footbridge and to provide an alternative element to house the ongoing tradition of Adelaide’s lovers marking their love with an engraved padlock.
